Crystal the Advocate has spoken on behalf of many environmental, educational and economic initiatives including industrial hemp. She was also was a featured speaker at the 2013 TEDx conference in Lewisburg, WV, where she presented “West Virginia and Quantum Physics: Small Things Matter.” She serves as the made-up-but-completely-real office of Social Media Senator for the Digital District of West Virginia. Crystal is often quoted as saying, “I’m a liberal Republican, a conservative Democrat with Libertarian tendencies who loves a good Mountain Party!”

What is a Social Media Senator?  Phil Kabler of the Charleston Gazette said, “While I’m equally put off by performance art and by social media, Good’s mission statement seems to be sound: That, as the low turnout in the last election showed, there is a majority of West Virginians who care about the state, but don’t believe they can make a difference through the political process. Good’s platform is to create a digital commons where people can express their ideas and positions on issues facing the state, ideas she can then take to decision makers in Charleston and Washington. Should be an interesting endeavor.”

While it’s no easy task being Social Media Senator given West Virginia’s broadband challenges, as over half of the state’s citizens don’t have any access to broadband, Crystal has never shied away from a challenge. Connecting people and ideas in a creative way has always been her a passion, and her role as “Social Media Senator” allows her to do just that.

Crystal is representing her Digital District with pride; however, there is still much work to be done. She is currently working with local “digital natives” to develop a platform through which concerned voters can channel their thoughts, after which Crystal can fulfill her role of delivering them directly to formal representatives. She’s open to ideas and partnerships that would allow the concept to become a successful model.

Good has one of the most creative expressions I’ve heard on mountaintop removal.
